wodSFTdll source code - why bother? (General questions)

by Art, Tuesday, October 23, 2007, 18:53 (6244 days ago)

We purchased a license with the source code. I always try to get source code when I buy third party controls and toolkits so we have more control over our future (if the supplier goes out business or we want to embed the source into a different DLL, or recompile with a future version of Visual C++, etc.).

Will I be able to recompile all source code with VC++ 8 for example? Can I recompile the source code as part of my EXE instead of shipping seperate DLL? These are the types of thing I expect to be able to do with source code.

But it seems the source for CWeOnlyDoLicense is not included with the package, and therefore my compilation depends on linking to LicenseDebug.obj or LicenseRetail.obj. It looks like I cannot compile a new License*.obj myself.

Is this correct? If so, it really makes the purchase of a source code license almost worthless to me.

Art,

our source code has some requirements and has some restrictions. They are all explained on

http://www.weonlydo.com/index.asp?order=1

so you know it upfront. We don't allow changes while we're arround.

I'm sorry you feel why bother way. We could *not* sell it at all, in which case someone could complain about not being able to get it in any case. We did, however, provide it under certain terms - and it was your choice if you want to obtain it for your own protection or not.

Hope I helped.

Your terms say Please understand that even if you purchase the source code - you have no right to change it, or include in your project in some other form than COM object or ActiveX control.

I did not consider recompiling with Visual Studio 2008, and rebuilding the wodSFTPdll.dll from scratch to break this rule (it is a DLL, not a COM object or ActiveX control and I am not trying to make any changes to the code).

Understand that I am happy with the use of the library as is and am only thinking about the future.

I respect your need to protect your intellectual property but I am comparing your software to another toolkit we use from codejock.com which lets us completely recompile their toolkit as part of our build process if we so desire.

The ability to get the source code was THE determining factor which led me to use your library over any of your competitors or for me to spend my time turning the open source PSFTP command line tool into a DLL.

Art,

ATL changed quite a lot after VC6, that's why recompiling isn't easy job. I think we could tweak it to recompile in VS2008, but... There are 24 products so switch for us isn't that easy, and for each we would have few hours.. And who knows what would VS2008 bring us (in terms of new bugs etc..)

So, why change the winning horse? It's easier to obtain VC6 from MSDN if you're a subscriber and it will work without any problems.
